Kelvin L. Smith - all electronics
Brand new album from Kelvin on the EMMA label for 2005.
"This c.d. mixes ambient, electronica, and chillout into an 'Audio Dream Experience', best listened too on headphones. I hope you enjoy this new collection of cool ambience. I made it especially for you" KLS Sept:2005
A superior slice of dark ambient music opening with "The Chilling Fields", referencing Mike Oldfield's soundtrack for "The Killing Fields" in its use of bell-like cup gong sounds, but at three minutes that's only a taster for "Time Stands Still" which fades in and out a slowly revolving drum beat. "Novocaine", "Wasteland" and "Soma" though are more typical of the album, sticking to slow chordal structures, while the title track consists of a single, gliding and swirling bass synth pattern.
Elsewhere there's a little more drum action and a few textures verge on the industrial, but the main force of the album lies in the area of dark ambience. and the textures here are rich and thoughtfully layered. Some comparisons with Roedelius or Dieter Moebius at their most minimal, or with Steve Roach and the Californian branch of dark ambient music.
MARK JENKINS, AMP Music
Kelvin Smith offers us his mastery at creating a work full of beauty and mystery, with themes that in some occasions tend to be of a melodic majesty, while in other instances they have an enigmatic, or even a dark air. The music flows in an impressive stream of cosmic soundscapes, communicating a wide range of feelings and emotions. This is one unusual album, fresh and innovative, which no doubt will contribute to increasing the reputation of the artist.
